Mardi Gras is French for ‘Fat Tuesday.’ The celebration gets its name because many Catholic observers of Lent would typically eat up all the traditionally-rich foods in the house (bacon, butter, eggs and fatty meats) on the Tuesday before the start of fasting and sacrifice during Lent. This tradition has evolved over the years to include not only great food, but also a full on celebration with colorful floats, lavish costumes, marching bands, masked balls, king cake, costumed revelers and beads. Lots of beads! The bead-throwing tradition dates all the way back to the 1840s. Decades ago, the beads thrown from floats were made from glass and imported from Czechoslovakia. Glass beads are still thrown from time to time during Mardi Gras and they are highly coveted by parade goers.
