Mandalay National Wildlife Refuge

The Mandalay National Wildlife Refuge is a 4,212 acre refuge composed of freshwater marsh and Cypress-Tupelo Swamp. The refuge is only accessible by boat and provides excellent habitat for waterfowl, wading birds and neotropical songbirds. A one mile drive-through nature trail is accessible by car.

The Marguerite Moffett Audubon Sanctuary consists of 108 acres of intermediate to brackish marsh on the west side of Hwy 56 near Chauvin. With its 700-foot long boardwalk, this birding sanctuary allows visitors an intimate gilimpse into the lush exotic birding habitat of Clapper Rail, Seaside Sparrow, Least Bittern, Marsh Wren and countless other species of birds.

With 35,000 acres of wetlands, this area is composed primarily of freshwater wetlands and provides an important habitat for wintering waterfowl of the Mississippi Flyway. From its two birding decks, visitors can see year-round resident wildlife including white tail deer, otter, alligators and diverse bird species. It is also home to nesting rookeries of heron, egret and bald eagles. Public boat launch available.
