Romancing the Bayou – An Itinerary For Your Valentine

Quietly take your time in a place that seems to be only for you two. Listen to the breeze. Watch the Spanish moss sway. Relax in the comfort of southern hospitality. Looking for Valentine’s Day plans? Houma Travel has you covered!

Louisiana’s Bayou Country is full of exceptional beauty. From the vast wetlands to the towering cypress trees, you’ll find the environment sweeps you up in charm. Begin your day early with a drive along the Wetlands Cultural Scenic Byway. This trail is an excellent introduction to Bayou Country, as it will take you past antebellum plantations, cultural centers and museums, Native American mounds and more. Be sure to stop at LUMCON or Coco Marina in Cocodrie for stunning views of Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary, a unique habitat for migratory birds and coastal wildlife and a great place to watch a sunrise.

Make your way into Houma for a stop at Downtown Jeaux. This coffee shop is tucked into historic downtown district and offers great views of centuries old oak trees while you sip your morning brew. Take in the view and enjoy a stroll through the historic district’s turn of the century architecture, before embarking on a walk through history.

Learning something new together is always a great experience. The Bayou Terrebonne Waterlife Museum is an interactive museum dedicated to the ways our unique culture evolved around waterways. As you enjoy the exhibits, you’ll learn about the heritage of Cajun, Creole and Native American people as well as local industries and folkways.

Grab and authentic Cajun lunch, such as a po’boy, before making your way onto the waters of Louisiana’s Bayou Country. A slow-moving pontoon boat is the perfect romantic way to see the wetlands. Allow an expert guide to explain our beautiful wildlife as the soft sounds of water wash past you.

For dinner, explore Houma’s fine dining scene. Cristiano Ristorante, for example, expertly blends the traditional recipes of northern Italy with the bounty of our locally sourced ingredients. You’ll dine on chargrilled oysters, blue crab ravioli or many other delicacies on their seasonal menu. Be sure to try out the extensive wine and cocktail menu of the wine boutique.

Happy Valentine’s Day from all of us in Bayou Country.
